Science is international. Scientists all over the world speak many different languages and represent many cultures, but nearly all of them use the same units, and the same counting system when doing scientific work. This makes it much easier to communicate scientific knowledge across borders.

The table below shows some of the main units of the International System of Units, and the agreed abbreviations of the units. The table also gives the names of the types of instruments used to measure these quantities.
