Elements in the same group on the periodic table have similar chemical properties.
- Group I elements ( ALKALI METALS )
Chemical properties:
- These metals are very reactive
- They react violently with water to form alkali soft metals
- They are less dense than water
Physical properties
- They have low densities and float on water
- They are soft and can be cut with a knife
- They all have silver, shiny surfaces when freshly cut
- They have a valency of 1
- The group II elements(alkaline earth metals)
Chemical properties:
- They react with water to form alkaline solutions
- They have a higher melting point than the group I elements
Physical properties:
- They are also silvery metals
- They are good conductors of heat and electricity
- They have valencies of 2
- Group VII elements ( Halogens )
Chemical properties:
- They react with alkali metals to form colourless solutions
Physical properties:
- They are non metals
- They have low melting and boiling points
- They have a valency of 1
- The group VIII elements ( noble gases)
- They are extremely unreactive
- Their boiling point increases down the group
