Chapter 3: The PERIODIC TABLE

Groups of the periodic table

Elements in the same group on the periodic table have similar chemical properties.

  • Group I elements ( ALKALI METALS )

Chemical properties:

  • These metals are very reactive
  • They react violently with water to form alkali soft metals
  • They are less dense than water

           Physical properties

  • They have low densities and float on water
  • They are soft and can be cut with a knife
  • They all have silver, shiny surfaces when freshly cut
  • They have a valency of 1
  • The group II elements(alkaline earth metals)

Chemical properties:

  • They react with water to form alkaline solutions
  • They have a higher melting point than the group I elements

Physical properties:

  • They are also silvery metals
  • They are good conductors of heat and electricity
  • They have valencies of 2
  • Group VII  elements ( Halogens )

Chemical properties:

  • They react with alkali metals to form colourless solutions

           Physical properties:

  • They are non metals
  • They have low melting and boiling points
  • They have a valency of 1
  • The group VIII elements ( noble gases)
  • They are extremely unreactive
  • Their boiling point increases down the group
