Civilian rule in Ghana under Kwame Nkrumah established in 1957 was overthrown in February 1966.the National Liberation council (NLC) set up under general joseph A.Ankrah who returned the country to a civilian elected government headed by Dr Kofi Busia, 1969-72, but was overthrown in a bloodless coup d’etat led by colonel Ignatius acheampong. The military rule of colonel acheanpong was overthrown in 1978 by general fred Akuffo, but in 1979 flight lieutenant Jerry Rawlings overthrew General fred Akuffo and JJ Rawlings returned the country to civilian rule under Dr. Hilla limann in 1992 and was confirmed president and re-elected in 1992, restoring peace and political stability.
