ELECTROLYSIS OF DILUTE SULPHURIC ACID USING PLATINIUM ELECTRODE

The ions present are 2H+,SO2-4 from H2SO4 and H+,OH- from water.

This discharged hydroxide ions disturb the equilibrium of water hence more H2O ionizes to restore it. The release of oxygen at the anode with OH- losing four electrons also causes the cathode to gain four electron therefore the reaction at the cathode is written as
