Chapter 1; introduction to computer science

Characteristics of computers that have made them useful
  • Computers are very accurate
  • Computers are extremely fast
  •  Computers have large storage capacities
  • Computers perform jobs difficult or impossible for humans
  • Computers have improved communication
  • Computers produce instant response
  • Computers work continuously for 24 hours

Computing work environment (Ergonomics)

Ergonomics is the science that deals with the efficiency of workers and the work environment. It takes care of the design and the functionality of the technology work environment, including a range of environmental factors.

Factors that influence computing work environment

Power source; computers need a source of power to function and this energy comes from electricity. Electrical fuses and plug must be firmly connected to ensure good contact. Loose connection may damage computer devices.

Furniture; a table to carry the computer and a comfortable chair for the user is needed. Accessories such as documents holders, mouse pads, and flashes should be well organized.

Workspace; computers should be used and stored in dust free and well lit rooms. Dust damages the internal components of most devices, including computers. The room or environment should not be too hot or too cold as these situations can cause severe damage to its components.
