Chapter 3: Computer System

Hardware and Software

Components that make up the computer are referred to either as hardware or software. These components form the computer system.

A computer system, no matter how complex, can be simplified into the major components: input, processing and output.

Input                                        processing                                     Output

     Computer System

  • Data is the set of raw facts and figures representing events and objects that a computer processes by following a set of instructions called a program. It can be in the form of figures (1, 2, 3, 19, 256...), letters (a, b, t, q...) sound pictures, etc.

Information-Data + Interpretation + Context

  • Information

Information is data that has been processed into a form that is useful

Information is data to which an interpretation or meaning is given.

  • Data Processing

Data processing is the process by which computers manipulate data to produce new information. processing operations include sorting, Searching, storing and calculations.

Sorting has to do with arranging data or information according to a given rule that could be alphabetical, increasing order, etc.

Searching involves looking for information or data from a storage location

Calculation/Data manipulation has to do with manipulating small as well as large figures.

Storing has to do with placing data and information in a storage medium for future use
