Chapter 2: Polynomials

Evaluating the polynomial

Consider the polynomial p(x), evaluating the polynomial at x = a it gives p(a).

Example; evaluate the following polynomials at x = a

  1. P(x) = x3-2x2+4x-5  , a=2
  2. G(x) = x2+2x+3        , a=-1

Solution

  1. P(2) = 23-2(22)+4(2)-5              2)  G(x) = (-1)2+2(-1)+3

                   = 8-8+8-5                                         = 1-2+3

                    =3                                                      =2
