Chapter 2: Measuring instruments

Examples of measuring Instruments

Ruler

-A ruler is an instrument for measuring length·

Examine a ruler carefully. It has a scale along one or both edges. The scale is made up of a set of lines called 'graduation marks'. A ruler is usually graduated in centimetres. In other words, the main graduation marks are one centimetre apart. Usually each centimetre space is divided into ten smaller spaces, each of which is a millimetre. In addition to being a measuring device, rulers are also used for drawing ('ruling') straight lines.

A long type of ruler' is often found in science laboratories. It is called a ‘metre stick' or a 'metre rule' because it is one metre long. It is graduated in ceritimetres and millimetres.

Balance

A balance is an instrument for measuring mass. The type of balance most often used in school science classes and universities is called a beam balance.

Another instrument for measuring mass is called a 'top-loader' or a 'top pan balance'.

Balances are used in the kitchen, the bathroom, the office (to weigh letters), in pharmacies and in research laboratories.
