Chapter 2: Measuring instruments

Measurement of mass using a balance

Measuring mass

Remember that mass (m) is a measure of an amount of substance, or matter. The SI unit of mass is the kilogram (kg).

Measurement of time

Using a clock to measure time

Remember that the SI unit for time (t) is the second (s). Time is measured with a clock. This is a 'general’ name for an instrument that measures time. Another general name is 'timepiece'. There are many different types of clock or time piece. A wristwatch is a common type of clock. We will look at some other types of clock later in this section.

Interval and duration

We've said that an 'interval' is the amount of time between two events. 'Duration' means how long something lasts.

What is the duration of one of your school lessons? We could say that the 'duration' of something is the length of the interval between its beginning and its end.

Some types of 'clock' or 'time-measuring devices' don't tell the time of day, but they measure 'segments of time' in other words, intervals.

Measuring intervals

Egg timer ('hour glass')

An egg timer is also called an ‘hour glass' because it can easily be made to measure an hour. What changes would you make in the egg timer to allow it to measure an hour?

This is an example of a 'clock' that measures an interval.

Pendulum

You can make a simple pendulum with a weight at the end of a length of string. The mass at the end of the string (pendulum) is called the 'bob'. If you attach the free end of the string to some fixed point and start the bob swinging, it will continue for a few minutes, with each swing getting smaller until eventually it is motionless. The time it takes for the bob to move through one complete swing-that is, from point A to point B and back to point A-is called the period of the pendulum.
