  • They needed the British protection against the French advancing from the South.
  • The kings encounter problems in their country like wars, killing and idol worshiping or put an end to malpractices.
  • They were tired of ruling their people hence wanted the British to come assistance.
  • The British administration of Calabar in Nigeria was so much loved by chiefs.
  • The kings felt very satisfied with the annual dash presented to them by British.
  • Palavers between chifs, natives, foreign traders were settled by British.
  • The British had succeeded in winning the natives, economically and culturally.
  • The natives found favour with English tittles like Kings and Dukes, looking glass etc.
  • The opening of factories, stores and many trading stations benefited the natives.
