Immediately after Cameroon was annexed by the German on the 12th of July 1884, the Germans penetrated the interior and expand their territory.
REASON FOR GERMAN PENETRATION INTO THE INTERIOR
- The German penetrated in conformity with the hinterland theory accepted at the Berlin conference.
- They wanted to abolish slavery and slave trade.
- They wanted to gain more land.
- They also wanted to know the sources of tropical raw materials in the interior of Cameroon.
- It was also to know the interior such that missionaries and traders carry out their activity.
- They also wanted to by passed the coastal middle men and benefits from the cheap prices of these products.
- Exploration had revealed the fertility of the coastal soils.
- They also hoped to gain control of trade.
