GERMAN PENETRATION INTO THE INTERIOR

Immediately after Cameroon was annexed by the German on the 12th of July 1884, the Germans penetrated the interior and expand their territory.

REASON FOR GERMAN PENETRATION INTO THE INTERIOR

  •   The German penetrated in conformity with the hinterland theory accepted at the Berlin conference.
  •   They wanted to abolish slavery and slave trade.
  •   They wanted to gain more land.
  •   They also wanted to know the sources of tropical raw materials in the interior of Cameroon.
  •   It was also to know the interior such that missionaries and traders carry out their activity.
  •   They also wanted to by passed the coastal middle men and benefits from the cheap prices of these products.
  •   Exploration had revealed the fertility of the coastal soils.
  •   They also hoped to gain control of trade.
