POLLINATION

Definition: it is the transfer of pollen grains from the on there of the flower to the stigma of the same flower or another of the same species which may or many not be on the same plant.

AGENT OF POLLINATION

Some agent of pollination include

  • insect
  • wind
  • man and other animal

TYPES OF POLLINATION

There are two main type of pollination:

  • self pollination
  • cross pollination
  1. Self pollination: it is the transfer of pollen grains from another of one flower to the stigma of the same flower.
  2. Cross pollination: it is the transfer of pollen grains from one flower to the stigma of another flower located on a different plant but of the same specie

INSECT POLLINATION FLOWERS

Flowers that are pollinated by insect are called insect pollinated flower they are also called entomophilous flower

CHARACTERISTICS

  • They have large petals
  • They have bridely coloured petals
  • They produce nectar
  • They are scented
  • They have large rough heavy and stickiy pollen grains
  • They produce few pollen grain per anther
  • Stamens are usually located with the flower

CHARACTERISTICS OF WIND POLINATED FLOWERS

  • They have small petals
  • They have dull petals
  • They do not produce nectar
  • They are not scented
  •  They have smooth, small and light pollen grains
  • Stamens have long, thin filament
  • Flowers are small

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN INSECT POLLINATED FLOWERS AND WIND POLLINATED FLOWERS
