Interrogative Pronouns

WHO and HOW Questions

(What, who, which, whose, where, when, why, how)

Look at these sentences

1) What is your profession? Nursing.

2) Who is your father? Dr. Lambo.

3) Which Church do you attend? Presbyterian Church.

4) Whose bag is that? Korneta's.

5) Where is your mother? At home.

 

Interrogative pronouns are used in asking questions. They either act as subjects or as objects.

We use who and whose when we refer to people and what and which when we refer to things.

We use how when we mean «in what way? »

 

These are words, which are normally used to ask questions.

  1. What is normally used to ask about things. For example, what kind of music do you like?
  2. Who is used to ask about people. For example, Who is a chemist?
  3.  Which is used to ask about people or things when there is a choice? For example, which of the boys is your friend?

     iv)       Whose is used to ask about possession. For example, whose shoes are these?

      v) Where asks about place. For example, where is Lagos? It's in Nigeria.

     vi)  When asks about time. For example, when is he coming? On Wednesday.

 

vii) How asks about manner, that is, in what way? for example, how do you catch a rat? By the tail.
