Chapter4: The Present Perfect Tense

Transitive and intransitive verbs

Transitive verbs

I) She drove a car

ii) He blew the whistle

Transitive verbs are used with direct objects. With such verbs, the action of the subject bears directly on the object. In example (I) 'she'perfoms the action (drove) on the car.

Transitive verbs always take the Subject + Verb + Object (S. V. O.) structure.

For example; She drove the car

                         S       V          O

In this sentence, she is the subject, drove is the verb, and the car is the object. Other

Examples are;

Subject (S)        Verb (V)           Object (O)

        Akuma            killed            the rat.

         Mokube        carried        the baggage.

Intransitive verbs

He cried loudly.

She appeared suddenly.

She smiles broadly.

Intransitive verbs do not use direct objects. These include verbs like sleep talk, walk etc. They do not appear in sentences with the S. V. O structure.

Example; He cried loudly.

                  S     V        A

In this sentence, he is the subject, cried is the verb, but loudly is not the object. It only adds something (information) to the sentence. As such, it is an adjunct. It is indicated with the letter A.
