Chapter 4: States of matter

TYPES OF MATTER
  1. The Solid state
  • It has a fixed shape because particles are tightly packed together in a regular pattern called a CRYSTAL LATTICE.
  • The particles do not move but vibrate against each other
  • There are strong forces binding the particles together
  • There is little or no space between the particles
  1. The Liquid state
  • Liquid can flow easily because particles can move; they take the shape of containers but always keep the same volume.
  • The particles can move and slide pass one another
  • The forces between the particles are weaker than in solids
  • There are spaces between the particles
  1. The Gas state
  • There are no arrangements between particles
  • Particles move at random and are very fast
  • There are very weak forces between the particles
  • There are very large spaces between their particles
