c) CHROMATOGRAPHY

It is used to separate two or more dissolved solids in a solution. We have several types of chromatography but all have the same basic principles;

It uses the different solubility of each solid particle in a solvent. Two phases are involved; the stationary and the mobile phase.

  1. Paper chromatography

This is the simplest type of chromatography used to separate coloured substance ( Dyes and Pigments ) in a sample of black ink.

Experiment in separating the dyes in black ink

Aim: to separate the pigments in black ink

Apparatus:

  • Filter paper
  • Black water-soluble ink
  • Glass beaker
  • Water
  • Permanent ink
  • Methylated spirits
