CHEMISTRY FROM 2

Chapter 4: States of matter

Techniques of separation

There are many different separation methods and each is suit to a particular type of mixture.

  1. Simple distillation
  • It is used to separate a liquid from its solution. The boiling point of the pure liquid in the mixture is usually lower than that of the mixture itself.
  • The solution is heated in a distillation flask so that the liquid doesn’t evaporate.
  • Vapour is passed out through a condenser to be cooled back to liquid form.
  • The liquid (distillate) will be collected in a clean container.
  • The solutes are left in the distillation flask.
