CHEMISTRY FROM 1

Chapter 2: Action of heat on a substance

Arrangement of particles in the states of matter
  1. Solid:

Solid particles are closely packed and they move about the same place because of a strong force of attraction between them.

  1. Liquids:

Particles in liquids are close together but are able to move because they are held by a weak force of attraction. Liquids are compressible.

  1. Gases:

The particles in a gas are widely spaced and free to move in any direction because they have no force of attraction. Gases are easily compressible.

The main difference between these states of matter is the degree of movement of their particles.
