CHAPTER 3: Pure substance and mixtures

Types of mixtures

There are five main types of mixtures namely;

  1. Solid- solid mixtures e.g. corn and beans
  2. Solid- liquid mixture e.g. water and rice
  3. Liquid-liquid mixtures e.g. water and kerosene, water and ethanol
  4. Liquid-gas mixtures e.g. top pamplemous, fanta etc.
  5. Gas-gas mixtures e.g. the air we breathe mixture can be classified into two; homogeneous and heterogeneous.
  • Homogenous mixture: it is uniform in composition properties and appearance
  • Heterogeneous mixture: it is non-uniform in atleast one of the following composition properties or appearance

Solvent: it is a substance that makes up a large part a solution. E.g. salt

Solution: it is a uniform or homogeneous mixture of a solute and a solvent

Solute: it is a substance that dissolves in a solvent

Suspension: it is a non-uniform or heterogeneous mixture of a solid and a liquid e.g. saw dust and water

Miscible liquids: these are liquids that have the same boiling point that are mix together e.g. ethanol and water

Immiscible liquids: these are liquids that cannot mix together due to their difference in boiling point e.g. water and palm oil
