Chapter 3: the Early Civilizations

Definition

The word civilization comes from the latin word "civitas". Meaning city. Life in a city is usually better than in a rural area or village. Civilization really means the improvement in ways of life. Such improvement is usually reflected in the way people eat, dress, live and do things together. All over the world, people developed civilizations of various kinds since the ancient times. Some of these civilizations were more prominent than the others, as seen in their durability (Ancient Egypt for example). There were also similarities and differences between these ancient civilizations. Mari improved his way of life in these civilizations in all domains of life-be it political, economic, social or cultural. All the continents of the world were affected directly or indirectly by these civilizations.
