Chapter 4; KINETIC THEORY

General properties of matter and their characteristics

There are four properties of matter;

  • Mass
  • Weight
  • volume
  • density

N.B; Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Mass does not change and is the most important of the properties of matter. An object of greater mass also has inertia.

Inertia is a body’s resistance to change its stage of rest.

MASS IS MEASURED USING A COMPRESSION BALANCE, BEAM BALANCE, LEVER ARM BALANCE ETC.

The SI unit of mass is Kg. other units includes; gram (g) and milligram (mg)

  • 1000g= 1kg

Volume is the amount of space a body occupies.

       Volume= length x width x height

The si unit of volume is meters cube (m3).
