Logic FROM 3

Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION TO LOGIC

THE OPERATION OF THE MIND

These are certain basic activities that the intellect performs. This includes simple apprehension, judging and reasoning.

  1. Simple Apprehension

It is the first fundamental activity of the mind which consists in the formation of ideas or concepts by the process of abstraction and attention. This is illustrated in the usage of terms. For example; a disk, a tree, a house, a shop etc.

  1. Judging

This is that act of the mind by which we affirm or neat a certain predicate or certain subject or when the mind compares two ideas, notices and point out their similarities and differences and pronouncing an argument and two ideas. This is seen from these statements.

  • All men are rational animals.
  • Nschang is an Akum man
  • No teachers are dull persons
  1. Reasoning (Inference)

It is the process by which from one or more given judgments, we derive another whose truth or falsity is implied in the former. Example;

  1. Children are beggars.

Therefore, this child Tanekou is a beggar.

  1. An inquisitive child is an intelligent child.

Therefore, all inquisitive children are intelligent.

  1. No thieves are honest persons.

Some children are thieves.

Therefore, some children are not honest persons.
