This is when we break down the term into parts.

This gives meaning to a new term. Example: AIDS as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

  1. Lexual Definition

It is real definition of a term.

  1. Analytical Definition

This states what a thing is form its genus and species.

  1. Ostensive Definition

It defines a thing by pointing at it.

  1. Descriptive Definition

It defines a thing by listing its external features.

  1. Synonymous Definition

It defines a thing by giving another name for it.
