In 1960, Rostow suggested 5 stages of economic development through which a country passes as it grows;

Stage 1

Traditional society

LEDCs; Somalia

Small agricultural output, low technology, little capital, poor transport system

Stage 2

Pre-condition for take off

LEDCs; Cameroon

Development of primary industry, production for export, improve transport network, secondary industry begins, extraction industries develop, agriculture is more commercialized

Stage 3

Take-off

NICs Taiwan

  • Rapid growth of industries
  • Increase investment of agriculture, transport and services
  • Core areas appear improvement in standard of living
  • Decline in agricultural properties

Stage 4

The drive to maturiy

MEDCs (middle economically developed countries): Hungary

Development spread from core areas to every or all areas, complex transport system are built, wide range of industries, rapid organization, declined primary industries, standard of living improved

Stage 5

High mass consumption

MEDCs: USA, Japan

High level of production consumption, high standards of living, slow population growth
