III. SOME IMPORTANT TERMS IN LITERATURE
  1. Plot: this refers to the change of succeeding events that makeup a story or it is the main story line of a text.
  2. Settings: it refers to a place, time, atmosphere, or environment under which every literary art is written setting establishes itself in 3 main ways.

Two type of settings:

  • Place setting: it refers to a place or area where a literary work takes place.
  • Time setting: it refers to the time or period where the literary work takes place
  • Historic setting: this is often the time of history when a novel, play or poem was written.
  1. Theme: it is main idea that runs throughout the story.

 

Two type of settings:

  • Major theme: it is an idea that the writer repeats in his word making it the most significant idea in his literary work.
  • Minor theme: It refers to an idea that appears in the word briefly.
  1. Character: A character is any person who has a role to play in any literary word. there are

Types of character: Dynamic and static characters.

  • A dynamic character: is one who changes following the nature of the play while
  • A static character: is one who remains adamant to change or does not change throughout the play.
  1. Character trait: These are particular qualities or personalities in a character.
  2. Characterisation: it is used step by step in literature to highlight and explain the details about a character in a story e.g. in ‘’ Not without my wife’’.  Acha is set to love.
  3. Protagonist: it is often the main character in a literary work. This is a character who stand at the forefront of the main stream of event they are usually refer to as hero(male)and heroine (female)
