Why do people carry out fishing?
There are various reasons why people carryout fishing:
- Fishing for survival or subsistence fishing: the fish caught is mainly used to feed the family without the intention of selling.
- Fishing for money (commercial fishing).
- As a profession.
- Fishing for fun (also called recreational fishing or sport fishing). In sport fishing, the fish is released back into the water after being caught.
- For scientific research.
Methods of fishing
Various methods can be used to catch fish. Some methods are good, while others are bad.
- They include: angling (using hooks), fishing with traps, fishing with spears, using chemicals (fish poisons), explosives etc.
Harvesting
Harvesting may be defined in different ways
- In relation to crop plants, harvesting is the process of gathering mature crops from the garden or farm.
- In relation to wildlife, harvesting means hunting, trapping or fishing.
- In relation to plants/trees, harvesting means gathering or felling/cutting.
Sustainable (good) and unsustainable (bad) methods of harvesting
- No matter the type of the species that is to be harvested, harvesting should be done in a sustainable manner I. e. In a manner that does not completely use up or destroy it, so that it will continue to exist for a long time.
- Bad/poor methods of harvesting involve harvesting a species in a way that its population will decline rapidly, and may eventually become extinct, are all bad methods of harvesting, Iogging, poaching etc.,
- Species that grow in the wild e. g. Forests, seas, lakes, oceans etc., are usually harvested in an unsustainable manner. This has led to a decline in the population of many fish species in the water bodies, animal and tree species in the forests. If adequate protection is not given to some of these species, they may eventually become extinct.
Gardening
Gardening is the practice of growing and cultivating plants as part of
agriculture.
Gardens may be for the growing of a particular type of plant, such as Bowers (ornamental or flower gardens), vegetables (vegetable gardens), medicinal plants or food crops.
Some gardens also grow different types of plants in separate areas, or sometimes the various plant species are intermixed in the same area.
