The use of ?a? and ?an?

“A” is used in front of words which begin with a consonant, example: a boy, a school, a pen, a bag, a house.

“An” is used in front of words which begin with a vowel, example: an orange, an umbrella, an apple.

NB: “A” and “An” are used If the noun is in the singular form.
