citizenship from 1

introdution chapter 1

How citizenship is acquired
  1. By descent: here one becomes a citizen by bearing the citizenship of his or her parents who gives birth to he/her.
  2. Through place of birth: here one becomes a citizen through the country of birth and not by the citizenship status of parents. Example; a child was born in America but whose parents are Cameroonians, become an American citizen because be or she was born in America.
  3. Through residence: this method, a foreigner could become a citizen of a country after living there continuously for a number of years with a clean criminal record. In Cameroon and England the duration is 5 years.
  4. Though marriage:  by this method, women acquire the citizenship of their foreign husbands. Example: a Nigerian lady gets married to a Cameroonian automatically becomes a Cameroonian citizen by virtue of marriage.
