- Nuclear family:
This is a family that is made up of father, mother and children. Even without children a husband and wife still constitute a nuclear family.
- Extended family:
As opposed to nuclear family, an extended family is made up of father, mother, children and relatives. Some of these relatives include; uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents, nephews and nieces of both man and woman.

- Provide a home
- Teach social roles and rules to their children
- Send their children to schools
- Discipline their children
- To inculcate the fear of God in their children
- To feed and care for their children especially those who fall sick
