Chapter 3: THE GERMAN ANNEXATION OF CAMEROON

REASONS (WHY, CAUSES) FOR GERMAN ANNEXATION
  • They need to protect German investments and traders in Cameroon.
  • Pressure from German traders and firms. Eg Carl Woermann firm.
  • To increase German investment in order to create jobs and increase revenue.
  • To secure new market for the German product especially after the British restricted. German trade in the Congo treaty in 1884.
  • To increase monopoly in order to make huge profits.
  • To gain cheap raw materials. Eg: Palm oil, kennels etc.
  • To exploit the fertile lands for the commercial plantation of crops. Eg: Banana, cocoa, coffee, rubber etc.
  • To have direct contacts with the producers in the interior to buy cheaper.
  • To easily recover debts owed by the natives.

Social Reasons

  • To secure extra living space for the growing German population.
  • To spread German culture in the territory.
  • To enable german culture in the territory.
  • To enabla German scientists carry out research and discoveries freely.
  • To enable German missionaries carry out their missionary work freely.
  • To secure variety of spices, vegetables, fruits and other fruit items.

Political Reasons

  • To fill the vacuum created by the British reluctants to annex Cameroon.
  • Off set of French plans to annex the territory.
  • Patriotic feelings among the governors in Cameroon who wanted to be only under German rule.
  • To gain prestige as a colonial power.
  • To secure naval bases in Cameroon.
