Chapter 3: THE GERMAN ANNEXATION OF CAMEROON

TERMS OF THE FINZL GERMZNO-DOUALA TREATY

This was prepared by the Germans to be signed by the Douala kings and chiefs. It did not contain all the terms of the preliminary treaty. It provision were:

  • The territory named Cameroon was geographically defined.
  • The treaty gave rights of soveignity, legislation and management to German firms.
  • The territory could not be ceded or given to a third party.
  • Former treaties of friendship and commerce should remain in force.
  • Respect for land rights should remain the property of the natives.
  • Annual payments as in the past to the kings and chiefs.
  • Local customs and usage to be respected (for native chiefs).

On the 12thJuly 1884, the Germano-Douala treaty was isgned on the side of the German were Edward Woermann, Johaness Voss, Edward Schmidt, Bush while on the side of Douala were Akwa Bell, Bi Jim Akwa, Joe Gamer Akwa, Elame Joss etc.

Nachtigal on the 14th of July 1884, was presented with the treaty and he officially declared Cameroon as a german protectorate by hoisting the German flag. Hewett arrived late and learnt of the signing of the treaty between the German traders and chiefs in disappointment, went annexed Victoria which has been founded by Alfred Saker in 1858.
