Chapter 3: THE GERMAN ANNEXATION OF CAMEROON

COMMENT OR CRITICISMS OF THE DOUALA TREATY
  • The understanding between traders and Douala chiefs was accord and not a treaty.
  • Some of the clauses like the middleman monopoly in trade was not included.
  • Not all traditional rulers signed the treaty. Eg: Lock Priso.
  • It involved the sale of native land whether knowingly or not, this led to seizure or expropriate of the Douala lands in 1912.
  • The Douala were not supposed to signed on behalf of all Cameroon.
  • By the 12th July 1884, accord the Douala kings gave their right of soveireignty, legislation and administration to the private German’s firms.
  • The terms of the treaty was not clearly explained to the people.
  • The representative of the germen parliament, Emile Schultze had not endorsed the king’s memorandum.
  • Poor sharing of the german bride to the native.
