Chapter 8: OPERATING SYSTEM

Definition

THIS IS A TYPE OF COMPUTER SOFTWARE THAT CONTROLS THE OVERALL OPERATION OF THE COMPUTER.

Thus all hardware and software activities are controlled by the operating system. The operating system performs important tasks like receiving input from the keyboard and mouse, sending information to the monitor screen, controlling the running of application programs as well as controlling the various hardware units such as storage discs and printers.

          Operating system provides a software platform on top of which other programs called application programs can run. Your operating system therefore determines to a great extent the application you want to run. For personal computers, the most popular operating systems include; Windows, Mac OS, Linux, DOS. Computer users often interact with operating system through a set of commands that are entered by means of the input units.
