Chapter 6: ECOLOGY

POLLUTION

Pollution is the release or introduction in to the environment of harmful substances by man activities in high enough concentration that is harmful to living organism including man.

TYPES OF POLLUTION

There are different types of pollution

  • Air pollution
  • Water pollution
  • Land pollution

WATER POLLUTION

Effect of water pollution

  • Oil spillage from tankers
  • Crude oilkills sea beds by oiling their pedals and making search for food
  • It also damages fish lavae and young fish
  • Hot water from industries: hot water from industries reduces the amount of oxygen in water this will lead to shortage.

AIR POLLUTION

Effect of air pollution

  • Carbon monoxide CO release in the atmosphere release haemoglobin to the body cell and reduces the ability of blood to blood cells and tissues
  • High amount of CO2 HIGH AMOUNT OF C02 to the atmosphere lead to global warming leading to global warming leading to melting of ice burges in to the pole. When ice berg melts, sea level rises leading to floating
  • Smokers: when breath in smoke may blacken, the aveoli causing damage to their epithelial lining. Soot may coal plant leaves thereby reducing the amount of photosynthesis

MEASURES USED TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTION

  • Education of the pollution
  • Reducing emission from moto vehicle
  • Establishing law’s to prevent air pollution
  • Used electrical energy in industries instead of fossil fuel like coal which pollute the atmosphere.

MEASURES USED TO REDUCE WATER POLLUTION

  • Treating sewage before dumping into water bodies
  • Bury sewage in pots
  • Education of the population
  • Reduces fertilizers runoff into water body by not using fertilizes on strip slopes.
