Chapter 2:The earth as a blue planet

The distribution of water bodies and land masses

The earth is called the Blue Planet because 71% of it is covered by water and the remaining 29% is covered by land masses.

  • The northern hemisphere is covered with more land than water
  • The southern hemisphere is covered with more water than land

 

  1. Continent

These are very large land masses. Al together there are seven continents namely; Africa, Europe, Asia, south America, north America, Australia, and Antarctica.

  1. Islands:

It is a piece of land surrounded by water. There are two types; continental island e.g. Madagascar, and oceans island e.g. ice land.

  1. Water bodies:

These are portions of the earth covered by water; they are oceans (e.g. Atlantic oceans, pacific oceans, and Indian oceans), seas (red sea, Mediterranean sea), lakes (lake Chad, lake nyos, lake oku).
