CHAPTER 2 CLASSIFICATION OF LIVING ORGANISMS

The 5 kingdoms classification system

Biologists have classified living organisms into 5 main groups called kingdoms. These 5 kingdoms are;

  1. Kingdom Monera (Prokaryotae)
  2. Kingdom Protoctista (Eukaryotae)
  3. Kingdom Fungi
  4. Kingdom Plantae
  5. Kingdom Animalia

  1. Kingdom Monera (Prokaryotae);

This kingdom includes unicellular organisms (organisms made up of just one cell) that lack organized or true nucleus, example: Bacteria

  1. Kingdom protoctista (Eukaryotae);

This kingdom is subdivided in 2 main groups;

  1. Algae: which contain Chlorophyll (a green pigment) and have a plant-like characteristics, example: Spirogyra
  2. Protozoans: which do not contain chlorophyll and are unicellular animal-like organisms, example: Amoeba, plasmodium, etc...

  1. Kingdom Fungi;

This includes organisms that are plant-like but lack chlorophyll, example: Mushroom, yeast, etc…

  1. Kingdom Plantae;

This includes organisms that have roots, stems, leaves or similar structures and they contain chlorophyll which is used during photosynthesis, example: All green plants (sun flower, mango plant, maize plant, etc…)

  1. Kingdom Animalia;

This is made up of all animals both vertebrates (Example: man, lion, goat) and invertebrates (Example: insects, worms, etc…)
