Chapter 3: Social insects

Definition

Social insects are insects that live together and carry out division of labour.

Certain members look for food, others protect the colony from intruders, some build hives or nests while other produce the young ones.

A colony is a particular group of social insects. In a colony, the insects are divided into small groups called castes. Each caste is adapted to its specific function.

Example of social insects include: honey bees, ants, termites, etc…
