CHAPTER 2 CLASSIFICATION OF LIVING ORGANISMS

ARTHROPODS

Arthropods are a group of organisms that belong to the kingdom Animalia and the phylum Arthropodia. The word Arthopoda comes from the Greek words “Arthros” meaning jointed and “Podia” meaning legs or feet hence, combining the 2 words, we have Arthropodia meaning “jointed legs”. The phylum Arthropodia is the largest under the kingdom Animalia and it is made up of 5 classes which are

  1. Class Insecta:Example: Insects (housefly, honey bee, cockroach, etc…)
  2. Class Malacostraca: Example: Crab, crayfish
  3. Class Arachnida:Example: Spider, tick, scorpion, etc…
  4. Class Chilopoda:Example: Centipedes, etc…
  5. Class Diplopoda:Example: Millipedes, etc…

Some of these organisms are either harmful or useful or both.
