Chapter 4: A REGION

THE ADMINISTRATION AND FIGHT AGAINST SOCIAL ILLS IN CAMEROON
  1. Administration

It refers to the governing authority in a nation.

  1. Social Ills

It refers to the vices or negative practices in society that disturb the smooth process of development.

  1. Tribalism

This is manifested when members of a tribe feel closer to one another against people of another tribe.

Characteristics of Members of the Same Tribe

  • They show solidarity and support their tribal members in times of difficulties. Example: death, illness etc.
  • They belong to the same tribal groups and associations.
  • They have tribal pride and believe that their tribe is the best.
  • They speak the same language.

Causes of Tribalism

  1. Political Expectations: Politicians encourage tribal sentiments among their tribe men for their selfish interest.
  2. Greed: Leaders in Africa have always given undue social and economic advantages to their tribe men.
  3. Geographical Situations: This is a cause in that, they consider themselves nearness to national resources or center of power and as such have that privilege to discriminate.

Consequences of Tribalism

  1. Conflicts and wars
  2. Appointment of unqualified persons because he/she is of your tribe.
  3. Tribalism obstructs the love of one’s nation.
  4. During elections, people vote only for their tribes men rather than voting the best candidate.
