2. SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
  1. EDUCATION

As far as the government was concern common German rule were converted into English based on Nigerian educational(ordinance).

           The british Nigerians and Cameroonians were actively involved in teaching.

  • The colonial administration, Natives authority and missionaries owned primary Schools.
  • Some scholarship were given to the Natives to study especially in Nigeria.
  • The British opened an elementary teacher’s training college at Kake-Kumba  in 1932.
  • The catholique opened a first college it was the st. Joseph college at sasse in 1939.
  • After the defeat of the Germans mill hill missionares in British Cameroon.
  • The Catholique opened the teachers training school at Njinikam in 1944 While the Basel  mission opened theirs at Nyassoso.

METHOD ADOPTED TO PROMOTE EDUCATION

  • Teachers were recruited in Nigeria and British.
  • The British encouraged the Catholique Baptiste and Basel missionaries to run Schools.
  • The natives authority schools vernaculars was use as a medium of instruction eg; The grassfield region the Mungaka and the Pidgin English were mostly used.
  • Teachers training centers were promoted in Victoria, Kumba and pollitine.
  • The British gave subvention to the missionaries running schools.
  • Cause of education were made very low with attracted pupils in the villages.
  • Effects
  • Education improve communication between the natives and the British.
  • The opening of schools provided skill/man power which made the natives to find jobs.
  • English language was promoted at the expense of natives language.
  • Farm work was slow down because children was instead now encourage to go to school.
