CHAPTER 4 : WATER AND WELLS

WELLS

A well is a hole that is duck Into the ground upto the water in order to obtain water.

TYPES OF WELLS

There are 3 amin types of wells

  • Surface wells:  this is a shallow well that obtain it from a closed visiting of surrounding . these type of water is most likely to be contaminated with dirty water from bathing and washing of cloths and feaces and wine from nearby pit toilette. Pit toilette should never exist such well at least 30M away from the well. Also water from such well must be sterelize
  • Deepwells: these are wells that are duck a very deep level with a layer of porous and nonporous rocks. The water passes through a layer of known porous rock first before getting to the lower rock level. The water is obtain from a large catchment area and is lessliable to contaminatation. If the water is well filter and purification it can be saft for drinking
  • Artesian well: this is a well that is formed between rocks formation with the shape of a bowl and is found. Where a lime stone  is sandwiched between impevious rock as such, the water is release under pressure and the pressure causes the water to rise above the level at which it was encountered during this process the water is well filterd pure znd good for drinking

CONSTRUCTION OF WELLS

The following precaution most be taken into consideration when constructing a well. A good well most be constructed

  • Atleast 30 to 35m aways from septic or a sewage reservoir such as latrine
  • On the upper side of a slope to avoid contamination by erosion
  • With brick or concrete to prevent  pollution from surface water
  • With mouth race up to prevent run off spilled water from getting into the well. The mouth should be race such that it is accessible to children and domestic animals
  • The lid or a cover should be provided to cover the well to avoid dirt from entering inside
  • It should be deep in a way that it penetrate layer of rocks such that water is filtered across the soil and the rocks for a concederable distance
  • It is preferred to use a pomb rather than a bucket to obtained the water because the bucket can easily be contaminated.
