CHAPTER 4 : WATER AND WELLS

METHOD OF WATER TREATMENT

Qualities of portable water fixed for drinking and have the following qualities:

  • No suspended particle
  • No colours
  • Free from impurities such as partogenicmicro organism, soil particle, organic water, toxic industrial waste and fertilizers
  • Ordoless
  • No taste

Water can therefore be treated to remove germs

  1. Boiling: Micro organism are killed at very high temperatures thus boiling water for a few minute make it save for drinking and cooking. After boiling the water, the water must be left to cool, your filter to remove solid impurities and then store in a clean container with a good cover.
  2. Filtration: it able to remove of suspended solid matter in water it is commonly done with the use of sand or realimate filters with sand filtration the water to be filter is put on top of a clean fine sand and allow to run through the various layers. Solid partilces will be filter off and clean water will be collected at the bottom.
  3. Chlorination: it is done by adding just small quality of chlorine. The chlorine forms and unstable acid with water, these acid easily decosiate and release oxygen which sofficate the pathogen.
  4. Sedimentation: when water is allowed to stand in a bucket basin or tangs the solid impurities in the water drop at the bottom of the bucket and then formed a sediment the water can then be poured into clean container gradually.
  5. Exposure to air and sunlight: sunlight kills bacteria at the surface of water but bacteria below the water are not affected and as such this method is very good method
  6. Addition of iodine:  it is very effective for killing bacteria and viruses found in water.

Addition of alum: alum is a chemical which help sediment to sink at the bottom of a container that is it forces particles of sand mould to coagulate together. The clear water above can then be poured gradually into a clean container.

 SUMMARY OF HOUSEHOLD PURIFICATION

  • Method that remove solid particles:  filtration, sedimentation, addition of alum
  • Methods that removes germs: boiling, chlorination, additing of exposure to air sunlight

HOW TO  PREVENT CONTAMINATION PURIFIED WATER

  • The purification water should be stored in a clean container
  • The container should have a light fitting
  • A clean cup or dish should be used to collect the water from the container
  • The container should be kept out of reach of children and animals
  • When collected water from a storage container.
