Chapter 1 PRESSURE AND DENSITY
APPLICATIONS OF PRESSURE (SOLID PRESSURE)- A sharp knife cuts more than a blunt knife because the edges of a sharp knife have a very small surface area hence exerting high pressure. Meanwhile a blunt knife has edges with large surface hence exerting low pressure.
- Foundations of building or dams are constructed with large surface area in order to reduce the pressure exerted by the building, hence preventing the building from sinking.
- The studs of a football player’s boot have very small area in contact with the ground, so as to increase pressure. The will enable the player to sink hence preventing the player from sliding off target.
- Skis have large surface area in order to reduce pressure on the snow, enabling them not to sink.
