Chapter 2 ENERGY AND MACHINES

POWER

Power is defined as the result as the rate of doing work or how fast something is done. Power can be calculated from the formula below;

Power= Work doneTime taken

P= Wt

Power can also be calculated from the formula below;

Power=Force*Velocity

The S.I unit of power is the watt (W), Joule per second (J/s), horse power (hp)

1hp=746 watts

Example: A machine has 3000J of energy and completes a piece of work in 20 minutes. Calculate the power of the machine.

Solution

P= Wt                      But W = 3000J, t = 20mins = 1200s

P= 30001200 = 2.5W
