CHAPTER 4: LOGIC AND LANGUAGE.

LOGIC AND LANGUAGE

Logic is the analysis of language and the clarification of the meaning of terms, words and concepts. Logic is taught in a language and each subject has its language. Logic has its language and this language helps the logician to communicate. Logic examines the meaning of words, how one learns or acquires a language, the determination of linguistic rules, and problems of translation into standard form are the concerns of logicians. The link between logic and language is that language permits logicians to communicate to others without committing errors on how we feel and how we think. It is a social process that reflects a complex set of cognitive or psychological processes that will lead to the concern of psycholinguistics. Here, we shall analyze language, discover the functions of language and even translate expressions into standard language or logical form. Take this simple example of analysis of language in logic. In the proposition: All boys are handsome people. ‘’All’’ is the quantifiers, ‘’Boys’’ is the subject term, ‘’ are’’ is the copula and ‘’Handsome people’’ is the predicate term.

Definition of language: Language can simply be defined as any system of words, signs, symbols, movements used to express meaning or feelings. A careful and correct use of language is a powerful aid to straight thinking.
