CHAPITER 5 : PROPOSITION

THE QAULITY AND QUANTITY OF PROPOSITIONS
  1. QUALITY : This means that the proposition is either affirmative or negative e.g.
  • S is P ( students are crooks) is an affirmative proposition.
  • S is not P ( parents are not teachers) or No S is P ( No pastors are cheats) are negative propositions
  1. QUANTITY: this means that the proposition is either universal or particular.

A universal proposition refers to the whole of a class e.g.

  • All teachers are intelligent persons
  • No students are businessmen

A particular proposition refers to some members of a group or class. e.g

  • Some dogs are wild animals
  • Some girls are not faithful persons

By combining the qualitative and the quatitative values, these propositions can be classified into 4 types as illustrated below;

  • Universal affirmative
  • Universal negative
  • Particular affirmative
  • Particular negative
