CHAPITER 5 : PROPOSITION

DEFINITION OF STATEMENTS, PROPOSITIONS AND SENTENCES

A statement is an assertion or a denial : Something is said to be or not to be thecase.eg fru ndi is the chairman of S.D.F denies.asserts something to be the case ; Fru Ndi is not the only chairman of S.D.F denies something to be the Case.

A proposition is a verbal expression of a judgment or an assertion of a statèrent that is capable of being either true or false e.g. some men are thieves. They propose somrthing about someone or something. They either affirm or deny someone or something. They differer from statements, commands, questions, sentences and exclamations.

A sentences is a group of words (including subject, verb and predicate) which together make up a complete statèrent. It could be in the form of commands, questions as discussrd in the previous chapter.

  • Why does logic use propositions rather than sentences ?

Because propositions assert facts which alone can either be true or false but sentences are more of commands.
