Chapter 2 APPROXIMATIONS

A) DECIMAL PLACES

We start by counting decimal places after the decimal point.

Example: - 2.3526 has 4 d.p

  • 20.13 (2 d.p)
  • 0.000081 (6 d.p)

When writing a number, a given number of decimal places we take the following steps:

  1. Count the number of places and draw a line.
  2. Check the digit immediately after the line.
  3. Round it up to 1 and add to the digit just before the line if the digit is 5 or more.
  4. Throw it away if the digit is less than 5.

Example 1: Write 602567 correct to:

  1. 2 d.p
  2. 1 d.p

Solution

  1. 6.25|67 = 6.26 (to 2 d.p)
  2. 6.2|567 = 6.3 (to 1 d.p)

Example 2: Write 8.3748 correct to:

  1. 2 d.p
  2. 3 d.p

Solution

  1. 8.37|48 = 8.37 (to 2 d.p)
  2. 8.374|8 = 8.375 (to 3 d.p)
