Chapter 6 VECTORS

THE INVERSE OF A VECTOR

The inverse of a vector, a=xy, is another vector b=uv such that the sum of a and b yields the zero vector. Ifxy+uv=00. The vector uv is the inverse of xy and vice versa.

Example: Find the inverse of:

  1. u=3-6
  2. v=51

Solution

  1. u=3-6,   Let the inverse of u be u'

Þu'+u=00 ,                    Þu'=00-u=00-3-6=-36

u'=-36

  1. v=51, Let the inverse of v be v'

Þv+v'=00Þv'=00-v=00-51=-5-1

v'=-5-1
