Chapter 2 APPROXIMATIONS

B) SIGNIFICANT FIGURES

We start counting significant figures from the first non-zero digit.

Example: - 8.2341 has 5 s.f

  • 0.00056 (2 s.f)
  • 3.023 (4 s.f)

When a number is not having a decimal part, we replace all the digits after the line with zeros.

Example 1: Write 4.82056 correct to:

  1. 2 s.f
  2. 3 s.f
  3. 5 s.f

Solution

  1. 4.9
  2. 4.82
  3. 4.8206

Example 2: Write 68254 correct to:

  1. 2 s.f
  2. 3 s.f
  3. 1 s.f

Solution

  1. 68|254 = 68000 (to 2 s.f)
  2.  682|54 = 68300 (to 3 s.f)
  3. 6|8254 = 70000 (to 1 s.f)
